COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

The following Parish Activities will be sponsored by one of our Parish RENEW Groups: Get-Well Card List - If anyone knows of a parishioner who is ill or hospitalized and would like to receive a get-well prayer card please contact Diane (384-3311).
Friendship Basket - We will be placing a box in the back of both churches to accept donations of non-perishable food items, paper goods and monetary gifts for a deserving parish family. When enough goods are collected, we will distribute the basket on a periodic on-going basis. For more information contact Diane (384-3311)!

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING

Natural Family Planning enables spouses to understand fertility and work with it, either to plan or space pregnancy. Modern NFP is very effective, costs next to nothing, has no side effects and is morally acceptable. Call the Office for Parish Life 207-2213 to let us know you are coming and for directions!
FOR LOCAL CONTACT, CALL ERIC & BERNADETTE JESPERSEN AT 788-4560!

GOOD SHEPHERD SCRIPTURE SESSIONS

Father McHugh will offer 2 special August scripture sessions on Thursday morning August 5th and Tuesday morning August 10th at Good Shepherd. This is something extra and is not part of the regular Fall program. The sessions will be dedicated to the memory of Fr. Robert Barone. Sessions will be similar to he regular program and will begin at 9:00 A.M. and last 1½ to 2 hours with refreshment break included. The topic for both sessions will be "Key Questions in Christology". Call Good Shepherd Church Office to register 788-3141!

ROSARY BEFORE MASSES

We pray the Rosary 25 minutes before the Saturday and Sunday Masses. Please join us. We dedicate the Rosary for the sick, suffering and dying of our parish, the end to abortion, peace in the world, our hearts and our homes, especially for all our troops.

2010 PARISH SOCIAL PICNIC

Our 12th Annual Parish Picnic will be here again soon. It will be Sunday, September 12th at Weston AA Park. There's lots of food, games and fun, as always. And this year we're having a baking contest to add to the fun.
We ask each family to please bring a "covered dish", including a food OR dessert of your preference. There will be coffee, soda on tap and diet coke. We'll start serving at 12:30. And bingo & games are planned from 2:30 to 4:00.
All our families are invited and, don't forget, there's no charge for the food and beverages. Instead, your donation is the food dish or dessert you bring.
Enclosed with the letter you will receive this week is a small return form. Fill out the form, with the number of family members in each age group who will attend AND the dish or dessert you will bring, plus your name, of course.
If you are planning to attend, please mail it back or drop it in the collection basket.

VOCATIONS -

FIRST ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC

We are pleased to announce that the Vocations Office has recently created the Saint John Vianney Vocations Endowment for seminarians in the Diocese of Scranton. This fund will accept donations to help assist our seminarians.
The first major fund-raiser with which we hope to grow the fund will be the 1st Annual Golf Classic, which is scheduled for Monday, August 30, 2010, at Blue Ridge Trail Golf Club in Mountaintop, PA. Bishop Bambera will be serving as honorary chair and joining us for the day.
If you're interested in participating or donating, please contact your parish office or the Vocations Office (570-207-2216 x 1013) for more information. We look forward to seeing you!

STAUFFER TRUST FUND

To inform anyone in our parish who may not already know, Claude Stauffer and his wife, Anna, when they passed away, set up a trust fund to be distributed on a monthly basis to the churches in our area, including Sacred Heart & St. Joseph's Parish. As a result, our parish has been receiving a generous donation from that fund on a monthly basis since January 2006. Let us offer our gratitude and prayers to Mr. & Mrs. Stauffer!

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

"We, the People of God, under the combined patronage of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Joseph, are called to be disciples of Jesus Christ. As members of the Body of Christ, gathering for worship around the Table of Word and Sacrament of the Eucharist, we commit ourselves to love and support one another in faith, hope and love. We are sent forth as apostles, in the power of the Holy Spirit, to make the Good News of Jesus Christ present and alive in our world through evangelization and hospitality, healing and service, education and the establishment of justice."

BLANK ENVELOPES AVAILABLE

There are blank envelopes in the rear of the church for any parishioners who have not received their collection envelopes or for anyone who would like to join our parish. If you use one of these envelopes, please write your name on it!

LIVING FAITH

Issues of LIVING FAITH for July, August & September are available IN THE REAR OF THE CHURCH.

LIFELINE

"It is not enough for us even to defend innocent human life. Of course, if we fail to do this, we fail in our most urgent task. But by good deeds of love and charity, we must build this active culture of life that is ready and capable of turning back hell itself. If we won't put the abortionist out of business we are pitiable souls. If we don't enact laws and work tirelessly to change human hearts so that life is forever reverenced and protected, we have not fought the good fight which is our charge as the Church Militant. As warriors we must first beat back the enemy. But then let us not forget that we are warriors for the victory of life!"
    Most Rev.Robert W. Finn

PARISH DIAPER DRIVE

Our Social Justice Committee is sponsoring a Diaper Drive for Catholic Social Services. Contributions of any size diapers may be left in the back of the church. Any questions, please call Diane (384-3203 WORK 384-3311 HOME)!

FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTIONS

FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTIONS will be on the 1st Friday of each month with Benediction & Adoration immediately after the 6:30 p.m. mass until 8 P.M.

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES

In the Diocese of Scranton, the Catholic Relief Services Collection is scheduled to be taken up in all parishes THIS WEEKEND July 24-25, 2010. This Collection supports important Catholic organizations that carry out God's work around the world. Your donations provide refugee resettlement, HIV/AIDS and international poverty relief, legal aid for poor immigrants, emergency and disaster relief and advocacy for the promotion of global peace and justice. The theme for this year's Collection is Jesus in disguise. We are reminded that Christ is present in those who suffer and in those who respond compassionately to their needs. It is important to remember our humanitarian obligations which we as Catholics have to our brothers and sisters in need. When you donate to the Catholic Relief Services Collection, you give hope. Please remember all the good you can accomplish through your gift. May God bless you for your generosity.

We have a rather sparse supply of books at the present time, but we are hoping for donations from fellow parishioners. (Please leave donations in the box on the floor so they can be catalogued.
The bookshelves are located in the foyer of the downstairs chapel of Sacred Heart Church and will be open for borrowing from 8:00am until 12:00 noon every Sunday. MARRIAGE PREPARATIONS

Couples contemplating marriage should make no arrangements prior to notifying their pastor. This should be done at least six (6) months before the date on which they wish to marry. Because marriage is a sacred and serious commitment, no couple can be suitably served by their pastor unless they begin their meetings with him at least two (2) months before the planned marriage.

SERVING LUNCH TO THE HUNGRY

Our Social Concerns Committee is trying to determine if some of our parishioners are interested in serving lunches on a once-a-month basis at the Hazleton Salvation Army Soup Kitchen.
Our partnership parishes, St. John Bosco and Good Shepherd, do this, and our Youth Group has participated periodically in the past. It is a very rewarding experience and puts our Beatitudes into practice.
If you are interested, please call Diane at 384-3203 (WORK) or 384-3311 (HOME).
Thank you also for your generous food donations, which are put in good use throughout the year!

MARY, FULL OF GRACE

Through Mary, you can draw closer to Jesus. Give glory to God by honoring Mary as the Mother of God. This is a new year full of grace to those who ask. Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was given the title "Full of Grace." She asks her children to pray the rosary. Invite Mary into your heart and home to pray the rosary with family and perhaps friends. She will make a difference in your life. "Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I will be with you."
The Pilgrim Statue sign-up sheet is posted in the back of the church. Make a difference and God bless you!
